Canmore Transportation Guide
Canmore sits outside the national park gate, and that changes the transportation picture more than most visitors expect. Here is how getting to and around town actually works.
Getting to Canmore from Calgary Airport
Canmore is roughly 105 km west of Calgary International Airport (YYC) on the Trans-Canada Highway — about 1 hour 15 minutes in normal conditions, some 15 minutes closer than Banff. It is the last town before the Banff National Park gate, which means you do not need a park pass simply to reach your accommodation.
Options are a private transfer, a shared shuttle (most of which are Banff-oriented and treat Canmore as a stop along the way), a regional coach, or a rental car. Our flat rate for the airport run is CA$425 for the vehicle, up to 5 passengers — see the Calgary Airport to Canmore page.
Private transfer vs shared shuttle
The Canmore-specific catch with shared services is that Canmore is rarely the priority destination. Timetables are built around Banff hotels, and Canmore stops are often a limited set of central pickup points rather than your building. If you have booked a condo up on Three Sisters or Silvertip, that can leave you and your luggage some distance from the door.
A private transfer removes that entirely: we drive to the address you give us, whether it is a resort lobby, a condo complex, or a residential rental driveway.
Rental cars and parking in Canmore
Canmore is more car-friendly than Banff — parking is generally easier and the town is spread across several distinct neighbourhoods. If your plans include driving into Banff National Park, remember the park pass requirement applies to the vehicle once you pass the gate. Condo complexes usually include a parking stall, but confirm with your host, as some underground garages have height limits that matter if you rent an SUV.
Getting around Canmore without a car
Downtown Canmore along Main Street is walkable, and Roam public transit connects Canmore with the Town of Banff on a regular schedule, which makes a car-free stay realistic even if you plan day trips into the park. What you cannot rely on is ride-hailing — Uber and Lyft do not operate in the Bow Valley, so local taxis and licensed operators are the alternative to transit.
Winter transportation
Canmore's winter roads are the same mountain conditions as the rest of the valley, with the added wrinkle of steep neighbourhood access roads up to Silvertip and Three Sisters that can be genuinely slippery in a rental sedan. We run winter tires and mountain-experienced chauffeurs. For guest safety we operate daylight hours only from 1 November to 28 February — YYC pickups must land by 3:30 PM, and Canmore departures start no earlier than 7:30 AM.
Hotel, resort and condo transportation
Most Canmore accommodation is condo-style rather than full-service hotel, so front-desk shuttle service is less common than you might expect and airport transportation is almost never included. Our pickups are door-to-door at whichever entrance you use — details on the Canmore hotel airport transfers page.
Families and groups
The GMC Yukon XL SLE seats up to 5 passengers with luggage. Families travelling with young children are welcome to bring their own car seat or booster and we will install it. Larger parties need a second vehicle — ask and we will tell you plainly what we can arrange.
Luggage and ski equipment
Canmore is a Nordic and backcountry hub as well as a downhill base, so gear volumes here skew large. Ski bags, snowboard bags, and golf clubs ride with you in the same vehicle. Let us know the count when you book.
Early departures and late arrivals
Because Canmore is closer to the airport, departure mornings are a little gentler than from Banff — but the same logic applies: work back from your flight, add the drive, and add a winter buffer. The departure leg is covered on our Canmore to Calgary Airport page.
