The drive to Kananaskis

From YYC the route runs west on the Trans-Canada past Cochrane and the Stoney Nakoda lands, then turns south onto Highway 40 at the Kananaskis interchange. Kananaskis Village and the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge are about 25 minutes down that road, with Mount Kidd rising directly opposite.

A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required for vehicles stopping in Kananaskis Country. It is separate from the Parks Canada pass used for Banff National Park.

Kananaskis gets a fraction of Banff's visitor numbers while sitting closer to Calgary. The Nordic Spa at the Mountain Lodge, the Ribbon Creek trail network, Nakiska ski area, and the golf course at Kananaskis Country Golf are the main draws. Wildlife sightings on Highway 40 — bighorn sheep in particular — are routine.

Winter travel notes

Highway 40 through the Kananaskis valley is unlit, exposed, and prone to drifting snow. From November 1 to February 28 we run daylight hours only — YYC arrivals by 3:30 PM, departures from 7:30 AM. It is the same policy we apply to Banff, for the same reasons.
