The drive follows the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) west out of Calgary, past Canmore and through the Banff National Park gate, then continues another 57 km beyond Banff townsite to the Lake Louise interchange. It is a single, well-maintained highway the whole way — but it is also mountain highway, and conditions between Banff and Lake Louise change faster than anywhere else on the route.

Winter travel to Lake Louise

From November through February we run daylight hours only: YYC arrivals by 3:30 PM and hotel departures from 7:30 AM. The Bow Valley highway is unlit, wildlife is active at dusk, and the stretch west of Banff holds black ice. This is a safety policy, not a scheduling preference — if your flight lands later, contact us and we will help you find an alternative for that leg.

Winter drive times run 20 to 40 minutes longer than the summer average. We build that into the schedule rather than rushing the road.

What is at Lake Louise

The lake itself sits above the village, with the Fairmont Chateau on its shore. In summer the draw is canoeing, the Lake Agnes Tea House hike, and the Plain of Six Glaciers trail. In winter it becomes a skating rink, and Lake Louise Ski Resort runs a shuttle from the village hotels. Moraine Lake is nearby but private vehicles are no longer permitted on Moraine Lake Road — access is by Parks Canada shuttle or licensed operator only.

How long is the drive from Calgary Airport to Lake Louise?

About 2 hours in good conditions, covering roughly 185 km via the Trans-Canada Highway. In winter, allow 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes.

Is there a shuttle from Calgary Airport to Lake Louise?

Scheduled shared shuttles run the corridor, but they depart at fixed times and stop at Banff hotels first. A private chauffeur transfer departs when your flight lands and goes directly to your hotel.

Can Uber take me to Lake Louise?

No. Uber and Lyft are not licensed to pick up or drop off inside Banff National Park, and Lake Louise is well inside the park boundary.

Do I need a park pass?

Yes. Every vehicle entering Banff National Park requires a Parks Canada pass. We can stop at the gate to purchase one, or you can buy it online before you travel.
