Landing at Calgary Airport: The Arrivals Guide
What happens between wheels-down and the front seat of your SUV — terminals, customs, baggage, and the exact spot your chauffeur will be standing.
Step 1 — Which terminal you land in
Calgary International Airport (YYC) has one passenger complex with two halves. International arrivals from Europe, Asia, Australia, and elsewhere come into the International Terminal on the east side. Domestic flights and flights from the United States that cleared US preclearance arrive in the Domestic Terminal. The two are joined, and both arrivals halls sit on the same level.
Step 2 — Customs and immigration
International passengers pass through a Canada Border Services Agency primary inspection kiosk, scan their passport, answer the declaration questions on screen, and take the printed receipt to a border officer. Most travellers are through in a few minutes; the queue is the variable, not the process. Realistically, allow 30 to 60 minutes from landing to the arrivals hall once you add baggage claim.
Most eligible visitors need an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before boarding a flight to Canada — that includes travellers from the UK, Australia, and most of Europe. US citizens do not. Sort this out before you fly, not at the gate.
Step 3 — Baggage and the arrivals hall
Carousels are signposted by flight number. Oversize items — ski bags, golf bags, strollers — come out on a separate belt at the end of the hall. Free luggage carts are available in the international baggage area. Once you clear the customs exit doors, you are in the public arrivals hall and cannot go back.
Step 4 — Where your chauffeur is standing
We meet you inside the terminal at the arrivals doors with a name sign — not at the curb, and not in a parking lot. Your driver monitors the flight number you gave us, so if you are early, late, or diverted, we adjust. Once you are through, we take the bags and walk you to the vehicle. Step 5 — Practical things to do before you leave the terminal
- Connectivity: YYC has free Wi-Fi. An eSIM bought before departure is usually cheaper than an airport SIM kiosk.
- Cash: you do not need it. Canada is effectively cashless and we take payment by Square terminal in the vehicle.
- Layers: Calgary sits at 1,045 m and Banff at 1,383 m. It is meaningfully colder up the valley than at the airport.
- Park pass: entering Banff National Park requires a Parks Canada pass. Buy online in advance or stop at the gate.
- Washrooms: use them before you leave — the drive to Banff is around 1 hour 40 minutes.
Timing your flight for a winter arrival
From November 1 to February 28 we only collect from YYC up to 3:30 PM, with hotel departures from 7:30 AM.
