Things to Do in Banff in Summer: A Local's Guide
Summer (June–September) is peak Banff — long daylight, wildflowers, turquoise lakes, and every trail open. Here's what to build your trip around.
Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain
An 8-minute gondola ride climbs 698 metres to the summit of Sulphur Mountain. From the top, a boardwalk connects to the Cosmic Ray Station and 360° views across six mountain ranges. Book morning slots — afternoons cloud over quickly in July and August.
Lake Minnewanka boat cruise
Banff's largest lake sits 10 minutes from town. A 1-hour interpretive cruise runs May through October, or rent a kayak/canoe from the boat dock. Bighorn sheep are usually visible on the drive in along the Lake Minnewanka Scenic Loop.
Johnston Canyon hike
The catwalk trail to the Lower Falls (1.1 km) and Upper Falls (2.4 km) is Banff's most popular hike for good reason. Go before 9am or after 5pm to avoid the crowds and get parking. The trail is stroller-and-family friendly to the Lower Falls.
Downtown Banff Avenue
Banff's main strip runs 4 blocks with restaurants, ice-cream shops, Indigenous art galleries, and the historic Banff Park Museum. Cascade Mountain frames the north end — one of the most photographed views in Canada.
Bow River float and Bow Falls
Rent a raft or SUP for a lazy float down the Bow River, or walk from downtown to Bow Falls (20 minutes) at the base of the Fairmont Banff Springs.
Wildlife viewing
Elk graze the golf course and downtown Banff at dawn and dusk. Grizzly bears are most active in June (dandelion season) along the Bow Valley Parkway. Always keep 100 m from bears, 30 m from elk. Never approach.
Getting there
Most international summer travellers fly into Calgary Airport and transfer to Banff — 90 minutes door-to-door. See our drive time guide for details.
