Banff Gondola and Sulphur Mountain: What to Expect
The Banff Gondola is the town's #1 paid attraction — and worth every dollar if you time it right.
The basics
The Banff Gondola climbs 698 metres up Sulphur Mountain in about 8 minutes. Four-person enclosed cabins run continuously. At the top: a summit complex with two restaurants, a theatre, and a 1 km boardwalk out to Sanson's Peak and the historic Cosmic Ray Station.

Best time to go
Mornings (first ride is usually 8:30am summer, 10am winter) — the light is best, the crowds are lightest, and afternoon clouds haven't formed yet. Sunset rides are spectacular but require booking days ahead in July and August.
Sanson's Peak boardwalk
An elevated boardwalk connects the summit terminal to Sanson's Peak — a former weather station named for Norman Sanson, who hiked up 1,000+ times to record readings. The walk takes 30–45 minutes round trip, is fully accessible, and delivers 360° views across Mount Rundle, Cascade Mountain, and the Bow Valley.
Hike up, ride down
The Sulphur Mountain Trail switches back 5.5 km up the east face (about 3 hours) to the summit. Ride the gondola down for $32 CAD. Popular in summer with fit hikers who want the workout without the descent.
Getting there
The gondola base is 5 km south of downtown Banff, past the Fairmont Banff Springs. Free shuttle from Banff Avenue in summer, or 10-minute drive. Your chauffeur can drop off and pick up on request.
